The IBM SSA Multi-Storage Tower 7131 Model 405 comes initially configured with two IBM's highest performance and highest capacity Ultrastar disk drives. The tower is also configured with three additional hot swappable slots. These additional slots may be filled at the time of purchase, or as needed to keep pace with your storage needs. The hot swappable slots can contain a mix of drives yielding a maximum capacity of 45.5 GB per tower. When storage requirements are greater than 45.5 GB, multiple 7131s can be connected to the server. Alternatively, the 7133 SSA Disk Subsystem can provide up to 145 GB in a single deskside or rack-mountable enclosure.There are significant availability benefits inherent in the SSA technology which enhance the IBM 7131 Model 405 solution. With the SSA loop design, a single cable failure will not cause loss of access to data. If there is a failure on a loop, the interface adapter will automatically continue accessing the devices in a non-loop configuration. Once the path is restored, the interface adapter will automatically reconfigure to resume the normal mode of operation. If there is a disk failure, the hot swappable disks can be removed without loss of communication between the interface adapter and the other disks on the loop. Similar automatic reconfiguration will set things back to normal once the disk is repaired and/or replaced.
