Cisco expansion module

Model: NP-1A-SM-LR

Cisco - Expansion module - expansion slot - ATM - fiber optic

Increasing demand for bandwidth-intensive services, wide-area network (WAN) connectivity and multimedia applications is driving demand for ATM networks. The Cisco 4500 and 4700 have supported the deployment of ATM for a broad range of bandwidth and distance requirements with the current ATM Network Processor Modules (NPMs). These cover OC3 multimode, OC3 single-mode intermediate reach, DS3 and E3 requirements. To support longer distances and therefor greater flexibility in network topology Cisco is now adding the new ATM OC3 single-mode Long Reach NPM. An important part of the CiscoFusion architecture for switched networks, the Cisco 4500 and 4700 ATM NPMs provide key ATM internetworking services to networks consisting of high-performance switching platforms including Cisco's LightStream 1010 for workgroup and campus ATM networks, the StrataCom ATM switches for wide-area ATM networks, Cisco's ATM-capable multilayer LAN switch, the Catalyst 5000, as well as the ATM-capable Catalyst 3000, and Cisco's high-end 7500 and 7200 routers. The single-port ATM OC3 Long Reach NPM, the NP-1A-SM-LR, supports distances of up to 40 km in contrast to the up to 15 km or "intermediate reach" distances supported by the ATM OC3 single-mode NPM, the NP-1A-SM. The NP-1A-SM-LR occupies one of the 3 slots on the modular Cisco 4500 and 4700 routers (Cisco 4500, Cisco 4500-M, Cisco 4700, Cisco 4700-M, not Cisco 4000 or 4000-M), and these routers can support up to a maximum of one per chassis. The NP-1A-SM-LR enables network administrators to deliver high quality of service for bandwidth-intensive applications such as video and multimedia services over the long distances associated with Metropolitan Area Networks, Wide Area Networks or Cable infrastructures. Other applications include use with dark fiber.
