The rapid growth of the Internet and Internet-enabled applications has led to a substantial increase in the scale and scope of bandwidth provisioned through service provider access networks. While most of today's high-speed WAN access ports are DS-3/E3, increasing bandwidth requirements have generated the need for OC-3c/STM-1 ports into service provider consolidated points of presence (POPs). In addition to customer connectivity, today's service providers need both seamless integration into their revenue-generating server farms and software services such as quality of service (QoS), security, traffic shaping, traffic accounting and billing.Cisco Systems now offers an eight- and a sixteen-port OC-3c/STM-1 POS Optical Services Modules for the Cisco 7600 for high-speed, high-density WAN connectivity. In addition to high-touch IP service delivery, four Gigabit Ethernet interfaces are provided on the same module and can be used for additional connectivity in service provider networks. These new line cards uniquely offer the ability for service providers to scale network bandwidth and performance while offering a wide range of IP services that may be applied without performance degradation.
